We’ve been talking about him and now you can learn more about this new hot artist. I got the chance to do a short but straight to the point interview with DTP’s latest signee, Steph Jones.
NHH: Since your a new face in the game tell us who Steph Jones is?
Steph Jones: Steph Jones is…Well I’m a young southern boy from Texas who has experienced a lot in my lifetime and i enjoy life in general. I’m very passionate about my music and i enjoy every bit of what and how I do it. Even if there was no money involved music would still be heavily apart of my life because of how it speaks to my soul.
NHH: How long have you been singing?
Steph Jones: I’ve been trying to sing my whole life but unfortunately nobody wanted to hear it because everyone always told me to shut up in class, at home, in college. So after hearing that every time i sang, it started to take a toll on me and i never wanted to sing. Then i got my own place and no one could say anything so i kept singing, not really taking it serious until i started going to karaoke. As funny as its sounds but karaoke is where i learned everything, so to answer your question. I have been really tryin to sing for four years.
NHH: Lol…Any influences?
Steph Jones: My influences are Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belefonte, Fleetwood Mack, Bob Marley, Etta James, Marvin Gaye, & Coldplay. My influences are the artists who sang and wrote from their soul, which is what i feel the industry needs write now.
NHH: Very different choices…What sets you apart from other artist in the industry?
Steph Jones: What sets me apart? Hmm. I never really think about that, I just be in my own lil world and try to satisfy myself because I’ m such a hater lol and I’m really picky, so if i can please Steph Jones then I’m satisfied. I will let the music speak for itself.
NHH: Lol its all about the music…So how did you get signed to DTP?
Steph Jones: Chaka Zulu and Ludacris signed me to Dtp/Def Jam in January. I met Luda when my brother was hosting a comedy spot in la and instead of him putting up a comedian, he told me to go on stage and start singing acapella, so i did and Luda liked what he heard and asked for my demo. It only had two songs on it at that time and i never heard back from him, which made me mad. So i started recording nonstop for the next three months then Luda came back to the comedy spot and i sang again. When i got off stage he said that he liked my other songs from my demo but he wanted to hear more and lucky for him, and me i had 20 more hot songs. He listened to them and the next thing i know i was meeting with him and his people about signing me. I chose to go with Dtp because they were the only label that weren’t trying to change my image or my sound.
NHH: You have the new single, Celebrity Chick with other fellow artist on DTP how was it shooting the video for that song?
Steph Jones: It was a lot of fun shooting “Celebrity Chick” because it was the first video I’ve ever shot where i wasn’t the “hot guy” without a name. (Example: Destiny’s Child “Jumpin Jumpin” and Faith Evans “I Love You”) so i had a blast. I dont really showcase my talent in the vocal area on this song but at the same time it is definitely a good look as far as coming out next to two multi platinum selling artists.
NHH: We know about the new DTP album but when can we get an solo album?
Steph Jones: We dont have a release date for my solo album yet but my first single,“Mr. Ordinary” will be released to the airwaves in about a month or so.
NHH: Who would you like to work with on the album?
Steph Jones: My album is already done. I co-produced half my album and i wrote 90 percent of the lyrics. I’ll have collabos and probably work with more “big names” on the next album.
NHH: Now question from the readers, what do you do in your free time?
Steph Jones: In my free time i do lots of things like hiking, track & field, paintballing, meditating, reading, myspacing of course lol, & painting. I could go on and on. When i said that i enjoy life i really meant that.
NHH: Are you single?
Steph Jones: No I’m not single.
NHH: That just ruined a lot of girls day lol…Any last words for the fans?
Steph Jones: Whatever you do in life make sure you do it from your heart and soul, because your soul never lies. Live out your dreams and not anyone else’s. Oh yeah, put me on your top eight ha ha ha ha. Im outty 5000.
